Is Gardening Season Over? Not likely.
Date:
September 15th, 2009
.
Here we are, closing in on the autumnal equinox.
Time to shut down the garden and balance some eggs?
Perhaps.
If you live in a different place in autumn and winter than you do in spring and summer, this makes sense. But if you live here year 'round, consider these options:
Garlic
Sunroot (Helianthus tuberosus)
Experimental late plantings
It is rather late to plant for fall harvest or overwintering, but if you have a cold frame, a sheltered area, or row covers, you may want to try seeing how far along you can get some hardy species to go before the really cold weather sets in.
The sun is getting pretty low already, but with a south-facing area you might be able to encourage some chard or kale or mache, perhaps even sprouting broccoli.
Winter rye is a cover crop that you may want to give a try in your garden this year, just to see how it helps as a green manure. Be sure to read up on it to see if it makes sense with your gardening style and goals.
Garlic goes in about four weeks from now, so in about two or three weeks if you are growing a cover crop, work it into the soil and give it time to break down a bit. Add compost and other amendments as needed (have you checked your pH lately?)
Then there are the autumn chores coming up, but more on that later.
