Date: June 18th, 2009. Those of us who love gardening, want fresh food for more than just mid- to late-summer will be garden planning this month, much as we did in the middle of winter. Fall crops can be started pretty soon. Bring back the cool-weather loving plants, like lettuce and other greens. Carrots, peas, beets, can be seeded outdoors in midsummer (check with your extension office to get good local frost date information). Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower can be started in protected areas and set out in the gartden a little later. For those with high tunnels, think about sprouting broccoli (also known as asparagus broccoli), parsnips, claytonia, mizuna, mache, and others that can overwinter with the right protection and care.
